A New Dawn for Rangers is Underway
The fresh era at Rangers is now in full swing—but a familiar face from the club’s recent past made a notable return to Ibrox for the first time since his departure.
After securing a crucial Champions League qualifying win against Panathinaikos last Tuesday, the Gers turned their attention to a summer friendly against English Championship side Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Russell Martin’s squad gave minutes to several fringe players, but they struggled to make a strong impression, falling behind 2-0 before Danilo and Findlay Curtis struck to salvage a 2-2 draw in an entertaining clash.
The match also marked a new chapter for Middlesbrough, now led by former Luton boss Rob Edwards—once linked with the Rangers job—who replaced Michael Carrick in the dugout.
By Edwards’ side was a recognizable figure: Harry Watling, who previously served as a first-team coach at Rangers under Michael Beale. Watling, 35, was part of Beale’s staff during his ill-fated tenure before being let go alongside the entire coaching team in October 2023 following a dismal start to the season.
After a brief and unsuccessful stint managing Ebbsfleet United (one win in 13 games), Watling returned to football last month as Edwards’ assistant at Boro. Saturday’s friendly marked his first trip back to Ibrox since his exit—and it was a warm homecoming.
On Instagram, Watling shared: “Amazing to return to Ibrox for the first time yesterday. Huge credit to the 8,000 traveling Boro fans who created an electric atmosphere. Great catching up with old faces—staff and players alike. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. Ready for a big season ahead!”
Middlesbrough continue their pre-season with friendlies against Hartlepool and Deportivo La Coruña before kicking off their Championship campaign against Swansea.
For Rangers, competitive action is already underway. They face Panathinaikos in Athens for their Champions League qualifier second leg on Wednesday, followed by their Scottish Premiership opener at Motherwell on Saturday.
